As part of its mission to serve the local community, state, and region, the Transportation Research Institute encourages commercial development of its intellectual property. Technology transfer plays a role in the development of local, State, and regional economies; commercialization of University-based technologies and intellectual property supports the creation of jobs, careers and businesses, and fosters continuous advancement of the University's education and research programs.

What are the Benefits of Technology Transfer?


Economic: Technology transfer adds billions of dollars to the U.S. economy. It has helped to create employment opportunities, spawn new businesses, create industries, and opened new markets.

Quality-of-life: Technology transfer leads to new products and services that improve the quality of life. Environmentally-friendly vehicles, studies of the most efficient way to produce alternative fuels, development and testing of more durable construction materials for transportation infrastructure, the examination of safer transportation modes and highways are a few among many activities underway in the TRI that will contribute to better living and work environments.

University: TRI's technology transfer goal enhances the University's ability to recruit and retain world-class engineering, science, and related faculty, and to attract outstanding graduate students. Technology transfer also enhances the University's reputation for innovation, increases the likelihood of product development through research-based interaction with the private sector; and increases its capability to provide highly-trained graduates for the workforce.

Engineers, scientists, administrators, attorneys, entrepreneurs, inventors, economic developers and government officials all play a part. The various parties share the conviction that innovations have the potential to change lives and the work environment for the better, and who have the vision, tenacity, and business acumen to make it happen.

Technology management practices include invention evaluation, inventor communications, patenting procedures, marketing and sales, licensing practices and enforcement of intellectual property rights, all of which are a part of Tech Transfer at the University of Kansas.
